Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
