Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
