The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.
This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears

International Reactions
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, leading him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
