The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
